How to choose and use energy-saving air-conditioner?

1. Cost or Economy
Consumers have long been most concerned about price. Yet, we usually pay attention to the purchase price of air-conditioners, namely, the initial cost, while overlooking operating and use cost. In fact, the cost needed for an air-conditioner includes two parts: total costs=initial investment (purchase cost) + operating cost (electricity bill).

Operating cost is usually included in daily electricity bills. Consumers must pay for the two parts. You get what you pay for. Low prices mean low quality (including efficiency), so it is unreasonable to pursue low initial investment. Actually, consumers who buy an efficient air-conditioner will be compensated with lower operating cost, although the purchase price is higher. Generally speaking, economic benefits from lower operating cost are far more than the additional cost to buy an energy-saving air-conditioner, and consumers will get better economic benefits. As China’s power shortage increases, residential electricity price will definitely keep growing. And the growing power price will necessarily lead to increase in the operating cost of air-conditioners and its proportion in the total cost. Against such a background, consumers who buy and use energy-conserving air-conditioners will get better economic benefits.
Therefore, consumers need to consider the purchase cost and daily use cost when choosing an air-conditioner.

2. Be prudent in buying and using discounted and cheap air-conditioners
Statistics show that more than 20% of air-conditioning products in China fail to meet the minimum national energy efficiency requirements and belong to unqualified products. Yet these products featured with low price and quality have attracted the attention of many consumers and taken considerable market shares. We should be aware of the negative effects that inferior, inefficient and cheap products will bring to the country and consumers. As we have said, such products seem to have saved our money when they are bought, but higher electricity bills arising from their use will soon offset their advantages in price and force us to spend more. In addition, their quality, reliability and service life are not guaranteed.

3. Miscellaneous Functions of Air-Conditioners
The core function of an air-conditioner is cooling, so any air-conditioner that cools down with less energy is a good one. However, due to fierce market competition, air-conditioner makers try every possible way to find a selling point and exaggerate some miscellaneous functions. Maybe the advertisers themselves are even not sure of the actual role of health concepts flooding the media such as photo catalyst, cold catalyst, negative ion and ozone, and China lacks standards, supervision and management in these fields. Therefore, consumers should not choose and buy air-conditioners for these functions.

4. Others
As for brands, appearances, manufacturers’ service commitment and other functions of air-conditioners, consumers can make choices according to their likings. But, we should pay attention to the following aspects:

1) The cooling capacity of an air-conditioner should match the room.
A certain amount of cooling capacity is fit for a room with a certain area and the area is affected by the structure, insulation performance, area of door and windows, and orientation of the room. If the cooling capacity is too small, the air-conditioner will have to run continuously for a long period of time, without stop; if the cooling capacity is too large, the air-conditioner will have to start/close frequently. Both are negative to the life of air-conditioners.
2) The temperature in the room should not be too low.
The power consumption of an air-conditioner will increase sharply if the set temperature in the room falls. In terms of comfort, 25℃~27℃is the comfortable range for human beings. If the temperature is too low, the air-conditioner will have to run non-stop or induce sicknesses such as cold.
3) Ventilation and air change in the room
One point should be made clear: an air-conditioner itself produces no pathogenic bacteria. But as it cannot ventilate and change air, the air quality will decline if the room is closed for a long time. So, when using air-conditioners, we should regularly open windows for fresh air. It is more effective than any air-conditioner.
4) About standby energy consumption
Air-conditioners not used should be unplugged. Although China has no requirements for standby energy consumption by air-conditioners, standby energy consumption still exists and is considerable. An air-conditioner plugged in consumes certain electricity even if it does not work. Over time, it will be a spectacular figure.
5) Installation of outdoor units
The outdoor units of air-conditioners should avoid areas exposed to sunshine as it will greatly increase the energy consumption of air-conditioners.
6) Regular cleaning
The filter of indoor units and heat exchanger of outdoor units should be cleaned regularly to reduce the resistance of air flow. This will largely reduce the energy consumption of air-conditioners and avoid some faults.
